Help us support the kids!

Back by popular demand, this R & B band is comprised of local musicians who came together to provide an evening of live entertainment that rocked the house!  And once again, all proceeds went to benefit the youth programs at the Kankakee Community Resource Center.
Pictured above kneeling in the front row are Gary Reynolds - local drummer/painter whose dream it was to play a live concert in the historic 800-seat Paramount Theatre; teacher Steve "Jawbreaker" Wunder of Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School on saxophone & director of the Paramount Power Horns; Lisa Jackson - vocalist for local band N-Deep & wife of the new CRC director Ron Jackson; and teacher Andy Battrell of Bradley West Elementary School - guitarist from local band On the Rocks & music director for Everyday People.
Standing in the back row are Victor "James" Brown - vocalist who previously sang with the band Liive for 23 years; teacher Paul Germano of the Herscher School District - trombone; Mellody Reed-Winfield - well-known vocalist & local blues legend; Dave "Top of the Hill" King of King Music - trumpet; Band Director Jerry "Iceman" Luzeniecki of Bourbonnais School District & Olivet Nazarene University - saxophone & flute; and teacher Ed Oberlander - music director of Cornerstone Church on bass, guitar & harmonica as well as vocals.

This amazing group of local musicians came together for this special event to once again show their support for the work being done by the Kankakee Community Resource Center.  Located a block and a half from the Paramount Theatre, the center was once a gathering place for soldiers committed to defending the nation.  Built as an armory for the Illinois National Guard in 1919, this historic building was saved a dozen years ago in order to become a haven for children while also providing a place where all members of the community could come together & enjoy a variety of activities - from basketball games between the local police & doctors to volleyball tournaments, gospel concerts, youth summits & health fairs.

But the primary focus of all programs at the Kankakee Community Resource Center are the children.  CRC has provided after-school programs since 1994, serving over 2500 children in our community by providing a safe, clean, fun, structured & life-enriching environment for homework tutoring, computer training, arts & crafts, special events & field trips.  Each child is required to participate in academic, social, recreational, motivational & personal improvement activities.  Over 500 high school & college students as well as adults have volunteered their time to help these children reach their potential.
With Ron's promotion to executive director, David Spencer is now the Youth Program Coordinator with a staff of one part-time youth leader & two part-time senior aides.  CRC conducts an after-school program that mentors & tutors children ages 6 - 16 and is funded through a $36,000 Illinois Teen Reach grant with volunteer help from Olivet Nazarene University students.  The rest of their needs are met through fundraisers.
Federal & state funding has been sliced dramatically.  Without your help the programs offered at the Resource Center are in danger of coming to an end.  If you are just hearing about the Community Resource Center for the first time, we ask for your support.  We all have the interests of the children at heart.  Please consider a heartfelt donation.
