Fan of space
program
hopes for safe landing
July 31, 2005 |
I am a fan of the space program.
Maybe it's because I grew up during a time when America issued
a challenge to the world to be the first to put a man on the moon.
In 1969, we did beat the world, and especially the Russians, to the
moon. Of course, in an equally but unimpressive fashion, the
Russians took away our Olympic basketball supremacy in 1972, and we
have never fully recovered.

The older I get,
the more convinced I am that I could never be a police officer.
Every so often an incident involving a police offer will
support my contention that a law enforcement officer's job is one of
the most dangerous and thankless careers in America. It may be
second only to being a teacher. continued

Real terrorism is back in
the headlines. The recent bombings in London have proven that
while we may be able to enforce our form of government upon other
sovereign nations, we can't stop terrorists. We can't stop it
from coming to America again or from rearing its ugly head in the
land of our allies.
So, what's a common citizen to do? We can all
look for the safest and least likely place to be attacked and move
there.

This event is not on the scale of
our famous 9-11, but London's 7-7 will stick with us for a while.
After waking to the news reports that a London subway
had been bombed, I am tempted to submit the international scramble
to become an Olympic event.
The initial news reports were that four explosions had
occurred during London's morning rush hour. Bombs hit a subway
and double-decker buses. Reports of casualties and injuries varied
by network.

crime
the ultimate in racism

Kids say the darndest things. Usually those things are funny
and cute. Sometimes they are not.
Recently a young lady in her mid-teens said she wanted
to talk to me because in her words, "You're into newspaper stuff."
Our conversation began.
"Do you read other newspapers besides the one you write
for?" she asked.
