Black-on-Black
crime the ultimate in racism |

Kids say the darndest things. Usually those things are funny
and cute. Sometimes they are not.
Recently a young lady in her mid-teens said she wanted
to talk to me because in her words, "You're into newspaper stuff."
Our conversation began.
"Do you read other newspapers besides the one you write
for?" she asked.
"I read lots of newspapers. If I could sit and
read newspapers all day that would be paradise." I responded.
"Ok, so did you read about the guy from Chicago who was
arrested for killing somebody a long time ago?" she asked.
"You mean the guy who shot somebody about nine or ten
years ago, but was just arrested a couple of weeks ago?”
"Yeah! Yeah! Aw man, are you serious?
That's my favorite uncle," her excited voice explained.
"You mean the killer?" I asked for clarification before
going off on a rant.
She went on. "The killer. He probably was
involved in some gang stuff and had to do it. I mean, I know
it's wrong to kill, but he is still my favorite uncle. He used
to bring me presents for my birthday and Christmas. And people
knew not to mess with me cuz my uncle was really protective of me."
Trying to be careful and not dampen her spirits while expressing how
I really felt, I explained that I hope justice prevails and that he
gets lots of jail time.
She pondered a bit then said, "Yeah. He is going
to get some time. And I think he should, but you know what the
good thing about this is?"
All I could do was look bewildered and wonder what if
anything good could come from killing another person outside of
self-defense.
Then she said the darndest thing. "You know, he
does have one good thing in his favor. See, he killed another
black man so he won't get much time for that. Yep, that's the
good thing, cuz if he had killed a white man he would be looking at
life.”
There was a long silence followed by prayer for some
divine intervention. "I see," was all I could come up with.
Ever since that little revelation, I haven't been able
to get her words out of my head. It is very sad when black
kids can justify killing another black person because they are
perceived as being worth less than citizens of other races. We
can pump billions of dollars into the black community, offer
therapy, and other social programs, but as long as black kids place
a lesser value on black life, our society is doomed.
According to recent urban legend, the CIA is
responsible for the invention and introduction of crack cocaine into
the black community, and the federal government is responsible for
the AIDS virus.
Who gets the credit for planting in the minds of blacks
that there is a lesser-penalty consolation for killing another
black? We should find that culprit and… well, let justice run
its course. |
