President, alderman
a lot alike |

It’s the
president’s report card time. Daddy Bush will be proud.
President Bush’s public job approval rating has climbed
from a recent low of 44% to 56%. It must have something to do
with who is asking and who is being asked. A better, more
interesting survey might be who positively approves of his handling
of the country.
We still have millions of Americans unemployed and
without health insurance. Soldier morale is low, and one-third
of the troops fighting in Iraq are without the modern, more
effective flak jackets, and although it is no longer front page
news, one or more soldiers is dying in the George Bush – Saddam
Hussein War each day.
Has the president done anything drastic to warrant an
improved progress report? Do the latest ratings have more to
do with Americans paying less attention to what Bush may be doing or
may not be doing because more important things have been occurring
in the past few weeks prior to the poll?
The Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox were both just five
outs from meeting in The World Series. Could this have kept
millions of curse believers from awareness of Bush’s goings-on?
Could the California recall have been another factor?
I can’t dispute his approval ratings. However, I
can’t help but wonder what the approval rating for Kankakee 1st
Ward Alderman Bubba Cox would be if his constituents were polled.
My gut instinct tells me that Cox would probably have a much better
rating than the president.
Both public servants have a lot in common. While
we would prefer compassion, integrity, intelligence, and honesty to
be requirements for any public office, they are not. Like the
president, Cox had only to meet the age and residence requirements
to be a publicly-elected official.
The president appears to be more interested in raising
campaign funds to get elected to a second term than in solving our
country’s problems. Cox is already serving his second term.
Bush says he is looking for Saddam Hussein, Osama bin
Laden, and other terrorists. Cox is looking for ways to
verbally terrorize local and state police agencies.
Bush can’t find or prove his claims that Iraq has
weapons of mass destruction. Bubba can’t find or prove his
claims that police are mistreating black residents.
The president has a black secretary of state and
national security advisor. The alderman would like the
Superintendent of School District 111, the mayor, chief of police,
fire chief, head librarian, and every judge in the county to be
black.
The Commander-in-Chief doesn’t seem to care about the
mounting loss of American lives in his personal war. The Ward
boss doesn’t care who he offends in his personal war against his own
city.
Bush uses his military leaders to write “form letters”
in the names of our troops. Cox has informal charges against
several government agencies.
The president wants us to think the war is going well.
Cox wants blacks to think Kankakee is hell.
While we would prefer people cast intelligent, informed
votes, it’s obvious that doesn’t always happen. From the
highest position in the land to the first level of public office,
Bush and Bubba are examples of what we get when people vote just
because they have the right. Just think, black and white
people died for Bush and Bubba to have the privilege to hold public
office.
Some may even be turning over in their graves. |
